10 terrible tortures of ancient Rome

In ancient Rome, torture of slaves was a common occurrence. When a free man was accused of a crime, he was forced to torture his slaves in his own house, often to death, in the pursuit of justice. But this did not prevent the rulers of Rome from torturing the free men and women of their country. In the laws of ancient Rome, there were always loopholes for this, and some rulers used torture without any regard for any rules at all.
1. Stitching the donkey's body

If you are interested in cruel and unusual forms of torture, then you should not look for a long time, refer to the history of ancient Rome. Take, for example, the torture that was described by Apuleius (“The Golden Donkey”) and Lucian (“Lucius, or the Donkey”).
The ass was slaughtered by a dead donkey and its entrails were removed. The convict was stripped and stuffed inside the animal. Then the belly was sutured in such a way that only the head peeped out of it - this prevented death from suffocation and prolonged suffering.
The body of an ass was exposed in the sun.It began to decompose, while the condemned within him was exhausted from the heat. His whole body was covered with worms, and the vultures pecked at the rotting animal flesh. Death came slowly, and the victims prayed for her.
2. Feeding on wild pigs.

St. Gregory described the heinous torture that the people of Heliopolis subjected the young women to while he was under Roman rule.
The virgins who had to go through this torture were first given to the mercy of the gladiators. After they lost their innocence against their will, they were publicly undressed and ripped off their stomachs, letting their guts out. Then their bodies were stuffed with barley and sewn back. After this, the poor victims were given to wild pigs, and they tore them to pieces.
3. Eviscerate

In ancient Rome there was a law, according to which the higher your status was, the more people you could fuck with impunity, but not vice versa. For example, the emperor could have sex with everyone. The commander had the right to seize the body of a lieutenant or an ordinary citizen, and the soldiers were above ordinary people.
To encroach on higher social status was forbidden. If an ordinary citizen raped a soldier, he was punished by public castration. If a soldier voluntarily gave an ordinary citizen, he was publicly gutted.
These rules, in conjunction with the voluntary love relationships between men, are all very confusing. It was easy to accuse any person of violating the law on rank and that he voluntarily succumbed to the harassment of a person of lower status.
4. Binding of a member

Tiberius was one of the most terrible and hated emperors in Roman history, and for good reason. He was almost always in a bad temper and enjoyed a look of painful torture.
The victim's penis was often the target of his cruelty. The emperor was famous for inviting his enemies to drink wine with him. After his victims were pumped alcohol to the eyeballs, they tied up the ends of the members, making it impossible to urinate. Shortly thereafter, the real torment began, as the victims could not empty the overflowing bladder.
5. Torture of the senator

Emperor Caligula was as cruel as old Tiberius. One day he ripped his stomach to the senator. The senator, surprisingly, remained alive, and then Caligula ordered to gouge out his eyes. After that, with hot mites, the senator pulled out his internal organs. In conclusion, the execution of the senator was cut in half and torn to pieces.
According to Roman belief, death was not a punishment, but a release. The punishment was torture, and death was allowed only after the person suffered a certain amount of pain and torment.
6. Stabbing in a barrel

Some people, in anticipation of the long-awaited death, should have suffered more than others. Under Emperor Domitian, Christians were tortured in the most horrific ways.
One of the worst tortures was that a Christian was doused with honey and milk. Then the victim was hammered into a barrel, and food that attracted parasites was also put there. The parasites devoured the insides of the victim, whose body began to rot inside the barrel. After about two weeks of such torture, the victim finally died, becoming a martyr for the Christian religion.
7. Buried alive

Emperor Nero enjoyed the fact that he buried people alive. Vestals who violated the vow of chastity, almost always were subject to this type of punishment.Only once did Nero change his principles when it came to the fate of the priestess of Rubria. She was walled up in a small cave, where she was left to die of hunger.
During other executions with the participation of Nero, convicts had to dig graves for themselves. After digging graves inside them, stakes were installed. Then the convict was tied up and pushed into the grave. If his crime was insignificant, he was pushed so that the stake pierced the heart. Other criminals convicted of committing serious crimes were pushed so that the number would mortally wound them. Then he was either left to die from excruciating pain, or buried alive.
8. Gnawing rats

Executioners often use animals for their atrocities, for example, as in the case of a torture boiler. For this particularly cruel type of torture, a hungry animal, such as a rat, dog or cat, was placed in a small cauldron. Then the cauldron was tied to the belly of the victim with an open side.
The executioner heated the bottom of the boiler, as a result of which it became very hot inside. The animal began to panic and look for opportunities to escape. The only "soft spot" through which it was possible to gnaw through the exit was the stomach of the accused.
9. Bee basket

One of the unusual torture was that the person was stripped and placed in a large basket. Then it was raised on a tree, on which there was a large bee's nest. The bees began to get angry and bit the person inside the basket until he died.
The convict should have suffered from pain as long as possible, but there were cases when the victims of this torture died relatively quickly - because of an allergy to bee stings.
10. Crucifixion

The ancient Romans loved to be crucified. At one time, it was the main form of execution for killing countless slaves.
Crucifixion is not always associated with nailing the accused to the cross. Sometimes the convict was stripped, leaving only a bandage on his head. Then he was tied to a cross or a fork, after which they began to scourge, sometimes to death.
If the defendant was not supposed to die from scourging, the next step was nailing his hands to the crossbar of the cross. After that, the beam was pulled to the required height and the legs of the convict were nailed to the post. He could be left so to die a slow death, and could kill his legs in order to hasten the demise.
Sometimes the convict was hung upside down. In other cases, the executioner cut off his genitals. The method of execution was different and varied from executioner to executioner; uniform rules did not exist.
