The popular educational online platform Prometheus has announced a free course on programming for the 5th grade school program. The project team hopes that the course in August will be approved by the Ministry of Education so that it can officially be used in Ukrainian schools, writes.
The course is called “”; it was developed together with the computer science teacher of the Polytechnic Lyceum of the KPI Lyudmila Bulygina. “The course is fully consistent with the school program of computer science for Grade 5, but instead of standard tedious lessons, teaches children to program with bright videos, interactive tasks and interesting projects. The course can be used to study online programming for children, but is primarily designed to be integrated into the school’s learning process, ”the course description says.
The course is offered to be tested in schools in the format of blended learning: children watch video lectures, perform course assignments at home or in class, and the teacher, whose time is freed from explaining the material, will be able to do more with each student.
The course can be used both as additional material and as a starting material in those schools where programming is not taught in practice (for example, due to the lack of teachers).
In the spring, the course was tested in 50 schools in the Dnipropetrovsk region. For example, in sec. Lichkovoy, 100 km from the Dnieper, computer science was part-time taught by a history teacher. The course gave students the opportunity to listen to lectures from a teacher from the Polytechnic Lyceum KPI. In Pavlograd, children decided to continue studying the course after the end of the school year. In one of the schools of Dnipro, with the help of the course, the programming of microcontrollers on the Arduino was added to the educational process: children in the 5th grade try to make their own traffic light layout.
The Prometheus team also encouraged volunteers — teachers, parents, teachers — to register to help spread the course information to all schools in Ukraine. “During the testing course in the Dnipropetrovsk region, to us, both the director, the teacher, and the parents, having heard about the project, came up with the idea to introduce the course in their school. From this, the idea was born to make a volunteer network for scaling the project, ”says co-founder of the platform Ivan Primachenko.
